The army has come out strong to warn various political actors including but not limited to members of Parliament across both political sides against the misuse of its armed officers.
It should be remembered that last year, the security departments decided to assign each member of Parliament with armed personnel to boost their security. This was due to the rise in crime that had put people’s lives stake.
This wave of criminality had taken with it the lives of prominent persons in society over a period of 2 years, notable among them being the then Assistant Inspector General of Police Afande Andrew Felix Kaweesi and the flamboyant member of Parliament representing Arua Municipality Ibrahim Abirigwa.
In a statement released by Brigadier General Flavia Byekwaso, the spokesperson of the defense ministry on her official twitter account, she noted that the politicians had started misusing the soldiers in this political season which is contrary to the reason they were assigned and is likely to involve them in compromising yet unnecessary and avoidable violence between the contending groups.
She went on to warn the politicians that the UPDF leadership with withdraw the officers if found to be misused.
