The Ministry of Health on behalf of the Government of Uganda has Wednesday March 10 embarked on the task of Covid-19 vaccination exercise at Mulago Specialized Women and Neonatal Hospital with the Dr. Ruth Aceng the Health Minister taking her first AstraZeneca Covid Vaccine dose at an event attended by various health workers and partners from Covid-19 Vaccine Global Access facility .
After receiving its first batch of 864,000 doses of the Astra Zeneca vaccine from COVAX facility, the Ministry of Health through Dr Ruth Aceng stated that at least 49.6% of Uganda’s population will be vaccinated in a phased manner, with priority groups like health workers, security personnel ,teachers and persons of advanced age taking the first jabs.
During the launch, the guest of honor, Gen Moses Ali, the first Deputy Prime Minister of Uganda thanked the COVAX facility and GAVI for making it possible for low and middle income countries like Uganda to access vaccines which is aimed at saving lives.
Dr Jane Ruth Aceng, the Health Minister, said that the priority groups will be handled first, however, since the vaccines are not adequate, this will also be done in batches as the vaccines come in.
He noted that Uganda is one of the few African countries that have benefited from the COVAX Facility’s donations, whose vaccines have been proved to be safe and efficient.
Dr Diana Atwine, the Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary hailed health workers and Ugandan scientists for their guidance during the pandemic that’s still prevailing.
Vaccination is set to be carried out countrywide at health center IIIs ,Health Center IVs , general hospitals and National referral hospitals.
