To compete with TikTok, Pinterest teams up with record labels to deliver popular music to “Idea Pins.”

TikTok, a competitor of Pinterest, is gaining new music. The business stated today that, as a result of new licensing agreements with Warner Music Group, Warner Chappell Music, Merlin, and BMG, its “Idea Pins” function, which focuses on videos, will now allow users to upload well-known songs by top musicians. The business said that this will complement the music already offered via Pinterest’s royalty-free music library from 7Digital.

Thousands of new songs by musicians like Dan + Shay, Bruno Mars, Michael Bublé, Twenty One Pilots, Zach Bryan, Paramore, and more will be made available with the launch, according to Pinterest.

On iOS and Android, the Pinterest mobile app will also debut a new music experience to make it simpler to browse and access this greater music library. To locate the perfect song to go with their Idea Pin, designers can search for it here by artist, track name, or keyword.

Creators must first open Idea Pins in order to use the feature. Then, after clicking the music icon, they will be led to a screen where they may search for and add their chosen tracks. Then they would publish their Idea Pin after recording it.

The change may make TikTok and other social media platforms that have entered the short-form video space, including Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, more competitive with Pinterest’s Idea Pins, which already offer the option to feature well-known music from major labels.

Idea Pins, which were introduced last year, are Pinterest’s original take on the now-ubiquitous TikTok short video format. This format has lately appeared on Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Spotify, and other popular apps. The 60-second Idea Pins let creators convey their stories using a combination of video, photos, music, and other editing tools as opposed to directly replicating TikTok, as some others have done but in a way where the Pins themselves may be tapped through, similar to Stories. In contrast, the Idea Pins feed scrolls vertically, similar to TikTok.

This format can be helpful for the kinds of videos that Pinterest creators would want to produce because it enables them to easily add elements to their Pins that a video-only feature wouldn’t be able to, such as a list of ingredients and instructions for a recipe or the names of the products used in a makeup tutorial.

The Idea Pins can be liked, shared, and commented on by Pinterest users. However, they can also store them to other boards for future use, which is a functionality TikTok currently lacks.

With the introduction of “Idea Ads” this summer, Pinterest also made the Idea Pins format available to advertisers.
