Former Lord Mayor of Kampala Nasser Ntege Sebaggala, popularly known as Seya, has expressed interest in his former position as Mayor of Uganda’s Capital City, contesting for the role of a People Power flag-bearer. Sebaggala says he joined People Power to introduce political maturity and experience to the movement, which it has outwardly been lacking. He says his main aim is to make the movement attractive to the older generation. “If we come as elders to give support especially to Hon. Kyagulanyi Sentamu and the young generation, it would be very good,” Sebaggala said seeming more articulate. “Age is just a number which should not be imposed as a barrier to political fortunes,” he added.
Seya took a break from active politics after his term as Mayor ended in 2011, making room for the current Mayor Erias Lukwago, a member of the Democratic Party. He settled for a more behind the scenes role as advisor to the current president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. However, as he claims, ‘age is
just a number’, the 72-year-old has come out to contest for his go-to role as Mayor, with his new strategy-Chinalizing Kampala. This puts him in the ring with singer Jose Chameleon, a much younger and more suited candidate for the youth movement who has also shown interest in the same role of Kampala Lord Mayor, on the People Power Uganda ticket. However, wearing the red beret for the 72-year-old seems like grasping at straws. His expression of
interest for the Mayoral position goes against the key principles of the youthful People Power movement; that the older generation should mentor the young into active politics, continually referring to president Museveni as Jjaja and spitting at his cling to power.
