A second fire has broken out at Makerere University’s main building (Ivory tower) less than 24 hours after the right wing was up in flames.
The second fire has erupted in the west wing, which had not been affected by the first fire in the wees hours of Sunday morning. The affected is mainly the council room, which is near the vice chancellor’s office.
The fire brigade had earlier exited the scene by the time the second fire had broken out but have since returned to the university to put the fire out before more losses are registered. The cause of the fire is still unknown and it has been established that no casualties have been registered as well.
The second fire comes after First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Mrs. Museveni Janet Kataha made a visit to the scene on Sunday morning and held a meeting with Profesor Nawangwe, MAK’s Vice-Chancellor, to get a better picture of what had transpired.
The 79-year-old building is the face of the University, appearing on postage stamps, postcards, advertising boards, academic journals, and national currency over the years.
