Uganda Rugby Cranes defeated Ghana Eagles 53-12 in their Rugby Africa Group C encounter on Saturday afternoon at Kyadondo Rugby Grounds in Kampala.
The rugby Cranes ran in eight tries, four coming to either side of the game, to Ghana’s two tries. Of the eight, Uganda converted five and added a penalty.
Faraji Odugo opened the show early, crossing over for a five-pointer before Solomon Okia and vice-captain Brian Odongo joined in on the action. Kasito would add a penalty to Uganda’s first-half points haul. The Ghanaians located a few holes in Uganda’s defense and registered two quick tries, converting one. A brilliant eighth-man pick saw Desire Ayera extend Uganda’s lead to 27 before Adrian Kasito made it 29 at the break.
Four unanswered tries from Uganda from Solomon Okia, Desire Ayera, substitute Aaron Ofoywroth and a beautiful show-and-go from replacement hooker Matt Kanyanya, put the game beyond resuscitation for the Ghanaians.
Ghanaians laughed at us thinking we are small boys but we beat them on scrums. Its our “small body, Heart of Lion” attitude that helped us.Captain Ivan Magomu
Magomu revealed that the win was a dedication to former player and coach Robert Seguya, who was diagnosed with and is battling Leukemia.
Uganda is in pole position to win Group C, with an encounter against lower-ranked Algeria to come.
