2020 has come with its fair share of barriers, the biggest of which is the fact that the world can’t come together in congregation or celebration.
Such is the reason as to why even though the Rotary Cancer Run is happening in 2020, it will not be the usual big numbers in a big venue celebration of the efforts of Ugandans to fight cancer.
Owing to the coronavirus pandemic, the Rotary Cancer Run 2020 edition is going to be a virtual one but it is definitely happening.
- It is happening this Sunday – 30th August 2020.
- While participants cannot buy kits to run, everyone is encouraged to purchase Cancer Run masks to continue the drive to raise money for the completion of the Rotary-Centenary Bank Cancer Centre at Nsambya Hospital.
- The masks are reusable, up-to-standard and go forth to support the Ministry call for all of us to wear them to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
- On Sunday morning, at a select location, a select few will be live on Rotary Cancer Run Facebook Page to take everyone else through fitness drills. Fitness drills have been the way Cancer Runs start and end.
- While masks are being sold to participants, those planning on running about their compounds and doing the fitness drills on that day are advised to do the drills not wearing the masks. Masks cut the oxygen supply that is needed for the body while exercising. Therefore, it is a health hazard.
- The ideal attire is the cancer run mask and any of the old vests that have been in circulation since the very first run in 2012. Those without cancer run kits can still purchase them alongside the masks.
Thus far, Rotary Uganda, Centenary Bank, Ugandans, and well-wishers have been able to build the 36-bed Rotary-Centenary Bank Cancer Treatment Centre at Nsambya Hospital and it is already catering to patients. Efforts are now geared towards acquiring two Linear Accelerators and two bunkers to house them.
NOTE: Masks are available at UGX 10,000 to buy at select locations (Capital Shoppers outlets, Game Store Lugogo, 9th Floor NIC Building (Rotary Office) or you can call 07o2 277 054 to have the face mask delivered to you by boda boda within Kampala at a small fee.
