The National Resistance Movement (NRM) chairperson, Yoweri Museveni, has given all persons involved in rigging and fraud allegations in the recently concluded NRM primaries for members of Parliament a three-day amnesty. As has become a norm, he used his latest twitter rant to address the concerns from the NRM primaries as he threatened to prosecute all the fraudsters that will not heed to his call.
The NRM primaries to elect flag bearers for the MP elections were held last week amidst lots of controversies that included voter bribery, threats, and violence that claimed a couple of lives. Rukutana Mwesigwa, a former deputy Attorney General, was a notable candidate. He was slapped with a charge of attempted murder after a video of him showed he grabbed a gun from his bodyguard, an event that allegedly caused harm to two of his opponent’s supporters. This went down during the hotly contested Rushenyi County elections made unpopular rounds on social media.
The elections in some constituencies such as Mawogola North where the president’s younger brother, Godfrey Aine “Sodo” Kaguta was battling it out against Shartsi Musherure Kutesa were suspended after cases of violence.
It is on this note that the president in his tweet, ran to the bible for shelter warning supporters not to involve his name when his biological relatives are contesting. “In Matthew 12:46-50, Jesus says that his brothers are those who do the will of his father in heaven. For me, like Jesus, my relatives are all and any NRM member who does the right thing according to the party constitution,” read the tweet
He went on to inform the party members that results in districts where there was a lot of contention would be released.
Today, the NRM party is holding primaries to elect flag bearers for the LC5 Chairpersons and Mayoral candidates in next year’s elections.
