The directorate of Immigration and Citizenship at the Ministry of Internal Affairs has asked Ugandans to apply for the East African passport with the phasing out of the old passports.
Jacob Siminyu, the Ministry’s spokesperson said that current passports will cease to be legal documents come 31st January 2021. In his address, he further urged Ugandans to embrace the use of online services in the acquisition of passports as this would save citizens both time and cases of fraud.
The e-system is integrated with National Identity Registration Authority-NIRA and National Identity Technology Authority- NITA-U. This saves the applicant the hustle and bustle of looking for recommendations from local leaders as was the culture before.
The Goverment through the Ministry of Internal Affairs also intends to extend the E-passport services to missions abroad for Ugandans who need to renew their passports.
The services will be rolled out in London in the UK, Washington in USA, Pretoria in South Africa Copenhagen in Denmark, Abu Dhabi in UAE and Ottawa in Canada.
