The new Malawi President Chakwera Lazarus who has named a new cabinet that includes relatives is facing a lot of criticism in his country as they accuse him of nepotism . The 31-member cabinet which majorly consisted of members from the ruling party Malawi Congress Party (MCP), United Transformation Movement (UTM), Peoples Party that is led by the former president Joyce Banda and other parties that made up the MCP party an alliance of different political parties.
The president having criticized his predecessor for nepotism, he could be following his footsteps which has caused a lot of outrage amongst the Malawians online after they said that the cabinet was made of family members. His former running mate in the 2019 elections has been appointed as the minister for transport while Sidik Mias wife is the deputy minister for lands.
Kazako a business man has been appointed information minister and his sister in-law Agnes Nkusa Nkhoma is the deputy agriculture minister. Kennedy Kandodo is the new labor minister whilst the sister Khumbize Kandodo is the health minister. A social activist said that they were disappointed with the new president who had promised to get rid of nepotism in the country but its now the contrary or the continuation of the previous regime.
The president who came to power in June after garnering 58.7% of the votes against his competitor Mutharik who got 39% in a court sanctioned presidential election re-run promised 40% female presentation and not more than 30 ministers. The presidents win had brought a ray of hope to the Malawi population however many are now disappointed as they claim this is a continuation of the previous regime
