In a not so surprising turn of events, president Museveni has gone ahead to pick nomination forms from his NRM party for the position of Party Chairman and Presidential Flagbearer, running back to back as sole candidate for the resistance party.
The both incumbent and presidential aspirant paid a whooping Ugx 20M to secure these positions. He now joins the list of over 50 contenders for the top most political job in Uganda in a pursuit for his 6th term in office.
Only the 9th president of the young country since independence, president Museveni stands at a political advantage over the other candidates on the basis of political experience; seizing power in 1986 and going ahead to win presidential elections in 2001, then 2005, 2011, 2016, the odds seem to be in his favor for 2021.
Although opposition candidates swear this is the end of the road for mzee, with key chips cast on young Kyadondo East MP Kyagulanyi Sentamu, President Museveni is very confident as always that he is the people’s favorite and it this will reflect in the votes.
The war on COVID-19 has made President Museveni a household name with many cursing him and an equal number praising him for his efforts in the fight against the pandemic. Either way COVID-19 has raised his popularity level and updated his profile. So while fellow presidential aspirants struggle for screen time because of the scientific elections, he is already ahead in the game.
Uganda is a third world country chock-full of potential and each presidential candidate has come on board with a mouthful of promises for prosperity and development once elected into the big seat. It is important therefore to exercise the state given right to vote with utmost caution.
