A 24-year-old taxi driver on Monday afternoon tried to set himself ablaze in front of Kampala City Authority City Hall only to be rescued by the police who later took him into custody at Central Police Station with charges of attempted suicdie offences .
Mutwahilu Bogere Wasswa is the chairman of Bweyogerere Bukasa stage in Old Taxi park, in Kampala who the man went in front of City Hall, with a five litre jerrycan of petrol and match box with intention to set himself ablaze protesting on the the way the city Authority was handling taxi operators without route charts.
“He was protesting operation on public service vans without route charts on Burton Street by Kampala Capital City Authority. We were informed and picked him before he could set himself ablaze,” said KMP Spokesman Patrick Onyango
It is less than a month after a motorcycle operator Hussein Walugembe a 29 year Old Ugandan died after setting himself ablaze when he tried to retrieve his motorcycle from Masaka police station but in vain which prompted him to commit suicide after failing to regain it.
He accused police of impounding his motorcycle and demanding a bribe before handing it back to him.
Mr Onyango has urged members of the community not take their lives for matters that can be handled amicably by the concerned persons.
