A number of people in Kampala City are still wondering what letter ‘M’ at the Independence Monument represents.
Over the weekend, photos of the Independence monument designed to form letter M started circulating on social media and some drew a conclusion, the letter represents Museveni.
Other city dwellers believe that since its campaign season, politicians are taking advantage of all resources available to them in order to draw voters’ attention, with most speculators believing that the ruling NRM party is cooking up something for the forthcoming elections.
However, upon further investigations on the ‘M puzzle’, a satisfying conclusion was drawn that the letter represents MAMA which stands for MTV Music Africa Awards. After engaging Daniel NuweAbine, the spokesperson of Kampala Capital City Authority-KCCA, the government agency charged with managing the monument, he said that “It’s about the MTV award” and provided no further details on the matter.
According to the MTV Africa Music Awards campaign brief, the letter is part of the teaser campaign created to excite the public ahead of the announcement of Kampala as the host city of the MTV Africa Music Awards 2021.
The MTV Africa Music Awards also known as the MAMAs were established in 2008 by MTV Networks Africa now Viacom International Media Networks Africa to celebrate the most popular contemporary music in Africa.
Rose Mwanje Nkaale, the Commissioner in charge of Museums and Monuments at the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities says she has seen the photos making rounds on social media but that the act amounts to adulteration of the monument.
According to the Historical Monuments Act of 1968, no person, whether an owner or not, is allowed to make an alteration, addition to, or repair, destroy, deface or injure any object declared to be preserved or protected.
Mwanje doesn’t know if KCCA has granted permission to anyone to use the monument but is yet to find out.
