Yesterday, 10th February 2021, Kyadondo East Legislator Honourable Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu led an entourage of National Unity Platform (NUP) officials to visit their colleagues incarcerated at the newly constructed Kitalya Government Prison.
“I looked at the thick walls of Kitalya and thought about the hundreds of NUP supporters incarcerated there for no crime whatsoever. I saw tears of mothers, relatives and friends who came to see their people but were kept outside.” read a post of the musician cum politician’s official facebook page.
Majority of the NUP supporters that are at the famed Kitalya Government Prison were arrested on December 30, 2020 on a campaign trail of the NUP Presidential flag bearer in Kalangala district leaving their patron to complete his campaign trail literally on his own.
These constituted close confidants of Bobi Wine, musician Nubian Buken Ali, head of civilian security Eddie Ssebuffu “Mutwe” and good number of his campaign team were taken to Masaka Chief Magistrate’s Court and charged with inciting violence and doing acts that were likely to spread infectious diseases.
While others were granted bail, forty-eight others including Nubian Buken Ali and Eddie Ssebuffu “Mutwe were re-arrested and arraigned in the General Court Martial where charges of illegal possession of ammunition were slapped on them. On Monday, the Lt Lt. Gen. Andrew Gutti chaired panel granted 13 of these bail remanding the others to Kitalya till February 15. The Kamwokya leadership looks at these as trumped up charges.
Kyagulanyi gave incumbent Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Tibuhaburwa a run for his money in the just concluded January 14 polls where he garnered 34.8% against the bush war general’s landslide 58.38% on just his first time of asking. Kyagulanyi, has however, quashed the outcome of the elections calling it a mockery and petitioned the Supreme Court to overturn President Museveni’s win.
