With the general elections in Kenya exactly a year away, the Kenya Editors Guild has announced that the first presidential debate will happen on 12th July 2022.
Churchill Otieno, the guild president, revealed the plans during a media sector working group forum hosted by the electoral commission in Mombasa. He confirmed that the second debate would take place a fortnight later, on 26th July 2022.
Given that the nomination for presidential candidates ends on June 10, 2022, we have set the first presidential debate for July 12, 2022, and the second one on July 26, 2022.
Vice President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga are neck-to-neck to determine President Uhuru Kenyatta’s successor.
Under timelines issued by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), aspiring presidential candidates must submit their candidatures between May 30 and June 10.
The debate allows the candidates eyeing the top seat to sell their agenda on a national platform.
