Honourable Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, an ardent member of the National Resistance Movement and current speaker of the Ugandan Parliament, was nominated yesterday, 11th August 2020 to contest for the position of Women Member of Parliament representing Kamuli district.
Kadaga, a lawyer turned politician has firmly held this position since 1989 and is bound to be the longest-serving Member of Parliament if she’s re-elected for the sixth term.
It is important to note that she is the first woman to be elected Speaker in the history of the Parliament of Uganda. She succeeded Edward Ssekandi, who served as Speaker from 2001 to 2011.
This position has also attracted strong contenders such as the very vocal Ms. Salaamu Musumba, the Vice-Chairperson of opposition party Forum for Democratic (FDC).
Ms Musumba made her intentions to run clear last week when she personally picked nomination forms from the party’s headquarters in Najjanankumbi before confirming the already anticipated political move.
She vehemently promised to give Speaker Kadaga a run for her money.
