President Yoweri Museveni has come out come to label former Uganda Head of State Field Marshal Idd Amin Dada as a shallow, cowardly and a lazy man without self confidence who thought by killing his challengers as the only way to countering criticism.
The President made these statements while giving his speech at the commemoration of Archbishop Janani Luwum Day at State House yesterday a strong critic of Amin’s government .
Archbishop Janan Luwum alongside many political prisoners during Iddi Amin’s reign, he was shot after a series of torture and later his murder disguised as an outcome of a road accident .
“Amin was shallow. How did he think killing Janani Luwum or anybody would benefit him? Killing people who are unarmed is cowardice and laziness. Some people don’t have enough discipline to defeat those challenging them by counter logic,” he said.
“If you are saying I am wrong, and I know I am right, I don’t fear you. I will come to you and tell you why I think I am right and show you how wrong you are. If you are confident about your position, there’s no reason to kill or intimidate anyone.”
“The killer doesn’t have the confidence that they can win the argument and therefore they will take a shortcut.”
Archbishop Janani Luwum was murdered on February 16th 1977 together with two government officials who included Lt. Col Erinayo Oryema, the then Minister of Land and Water Resources, and Charles Oboth‐Ofumbi, Minister of Internal Affairs.
He was one of the leading critics of the brutal rule of the the then President in power from 1971-1977 where he delivered a note of protest to Amin condemning him for arbitrary killings and unexplained disappearances of Ugandans something that didn’t go well with the dictator who ordered for his arrest and later on his murder which was disguised as a car accident to the public.
February 16th is now commemorated annually as Archbishop Janani Luwum day, remembering his courage to stand up against dictator Amin and his sacrifice.
These celebrations come at a time where 0ver 50 people were shot dead between the date of 18th to 19th following the protests against the arrest of political rival Robert kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine and also criticism from human rights activists who have condemned the President for continued kidnap and disappearance of people who are said to belong the National Unity Party that is led by Bobi wine .
