Kira Municipality legislator Ssemujju Ibrahim Nganda has today made known his intention to contest for the Speaker of Parliament’s office.
Hon. Ssemujju aims to take charge of the 11th parliament of Uganda. Hon. Ssemujju was elected MP in the recently concluded general elections and emerged as one of few legislators not belonging to NUP to make it to the August House, representing Central Region constituencies.
Ssemujju is expected to go up against NRM’s Rebecca Kadaga Alitwala and Jacob Oulanyah who served as Speaker and Deputy Speaker in the 10th Parliament.
He has been a darling of political TV talk shows appearing on UBC, NBS and NTV talking about Uganda’s political landscape. Last November, Hon Ssemujju took Gen Elly Tumwine, the minister for Security, discussing the November 2020 riots. This particular appearance gave him mileage as a leader of the opposition when taking on the NRM and the class of 1986.
Hon. Ssemujju Ibrahim Nganda served as the Opposition Chief Whip in the 10th Parliament. He says he is not an opposition candidate but one for everybody and that his competence stands high for him. He adds that his two terms in parliament have helped him gain the needed experience hence he is capable of leading parliament.
The 11th parliament will be sworn in in may 2021 and the speakership elections are high up on the agenda once they assume office.
