Hoima was among the fifteen municipalities that recently earned the prestigious city status. It was launched today amidst rounds of jubilation and excitement.
Its inauguration makes it the tenth municipality to officially take on the city status in this financial year. This move was fronted by parliamentarians ahead of the 2021/22 financial year.
The pompous launch was presided over by Raphael Magyezi. In his message to the People of Hoima, he asked that voters in the newly installed cities should not corrupt their leaders as this will greatly sabotage the purpose for which the city was created.
While speaking at the inauguration ceremony held at the former Municipal headquarters, Magyezi asked the people of Bunyoro to use this city status to attract more tourists and improve the tourism industry.
“Hoima is the only oil city in Uganda, I, therefore, urge leaders to ensure its a well-planned model city.”
Benjamin Kumanya, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Local Government assured the people of Hoima that the Ministry will do everything possible to ensure the proper planning of the city.
The Hoima City Mayor, Ms. Mary Grace Mugasa outlined some of the challenges they’re facing at the moment such as limited funding from the center, poor remuneration of both political and technical leaders not forgetting the constant theft of installations made to beautify the city.
