The story about the Makerere University student Tegu Emmanuel who was believed to have been killed by LDUs has taken another twist. In statement initially issued by the Uganda Police, they said that Tegu was beaten by a mob inside the university and died in hospital 7 days later.
However new details have emerged that guards at the Centenary Bank in the university are the ones that beat up the 3rd year Makerere University student. According to Father Josephat Ddungu the chaplain of St. Francis Chapel Makerere, he heard a gunshot and later opened his windows and saw someone being beaten by security guards.
New footage from the security cameras at the chapel shows that the deceased was beaten by security guards. Police had earlier on arrested 10 suspects who were believed to have participated in the beating that later caused the deceased to have multiple organ failure and hence his death.
According to Police, the deceased had a mental illness that caused him to act abnormal and aggressive. However, police spokesperson Fred Enanga said that the case might not have been followed up properly.
The family of the late Tegu however says that he (Tegu) told them, while on his death bed, that he was beaten security personnel. Whether the late was referring to the security personnel at the bank or LDUs is something that he only can clarify.
The twists and turns in this story continue to question how the matter is being handled by the police which has now changed its statements twice after arresting 10 suspects. Ugandans on Twitter however continue with the hashtag to get justice for the late Tegu and hopefully, the Police will get to the bottom of the entire case and get Tegu’s family some justice.
