Signatures of the National Unity Platform flag bearer for the upcoming presidential elections, Honourable Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu have been finally verified and cleared by the Electoral Commission today, October 28. This development ensures that the only step left for the Afropop star cum politician to appear on the ballot paper during next year’s polls is getting nominated with nominations for presidential candidates set for 2nd and 3rd November.
This news comes barely two days after the Kamwokya camp launched a new campaign poster for their candidate following numerous confrontations with security organs over the posters with Kyagulanyi wearing a red beret.
Kyagulanyi’s verification brings the total number of candidates whose signatures have been verified to 10 as the incumbent and National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, independents Fred Mwesigye, Mayambala Willy, John Katumba, Kalembe Nancy Linda had earlier been verified and cleared. Former sports scribe Joseph Kabuleeta, alongside former spy chief Lt. Gen. Tumukunde Henry Kakurugu who are both independents, have been verified too.
The Forum for Democratic Change(FDC) looks set to have an unfamiliar face on the ballot as party president Engineer Patrick Oboi Amuriat’s signatures have met the Justice Simon Byamukama led Commission’s standard. Speaking matters Najjanakumbi, former party president and army commander Major General Mugisha Muntu’s signatures have been verified too. The retired general is contesting under the newly formed Alliance for National Transformation
This leaves the Ecological Party of Uganda’s Bbaale Charles, independents Lugudee-Katwe Elizabeth, Mbulambago Robert, Ebelu Simon, the comical Mabiriza Joseph, Yamureebere Jotham, Makmot Moses, Okoth Geoffrey, Katushemererwe Brenda, Sserunjogi Henry, and Mirembe Phiona’s signatures pending for verification. In other news Democratic Party leader Hon. Norbert Mao has launched an online design contest for his presidential poster.
