The Kampala City Council Authority has resolved to rename Dastur Street after the late Al-Hajj Nasser Ntege Ssebaggala.
The late businessman was Kampala’s first elected Mayor in 1998. It was on this street that Al-Hajj Nasser Ntege announced he would support Retired Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye’s presidential bid, after the latter had fallen out with his Commander-In-Chief, cooling down the rumors that he would contest in the 2001 general elections himself.
This move will be welcomed by many as lawyers, and politicians alike have been lobbying with KCCA to change the names of the streets in Kampala from the Colonial names.
In June, Mr Apollo Makubuya, a renowned lawyer and special advisor to the Kabaka on palace affairs, led a group of individuals and petitioned the government to abolish all colonial names and replace them with indigenous ones.
