On 5th October, the Democratic Party(DP) unveiled actor Charles James Ssenkubugeas their flagbearer in the Kampala Mayoral race ahead of the 2021 general election.
Mr. Ssenkubuge is to go against incumbent Erias Lukwago (formerly of DP but now represent the Forum for Democratic Change), NUP’s Nabilah Naggayi Sempala (formerly of FDC), and famed musicians Daniel “Ragga Dee” Kazibwe who is representing NRM, and Joseph “Dr Chameleone” Mayanja who is contesting independently.
Ssenkubuge replaces DP’s Beatrice Kayanja who was disqualified by the Electoral Commission after failing to meet the requisite demands for her nomination.
It is not Ssenkubuge’s first go at politics. The Bakayimbira Dramactors lead contested for Presidency in 2001. He ran with the monicker, “Siasa.”
“To the people of Kampala City, we present Ssenkubuge Charles James for Lord Mayorship. Please grant him your support and votes,” said Mr. Okoler Opio Lo Amanu, DP’s new spokesperson.
Charles is a veteran journalist, who once presented a weekday program called “Binsangawanno” on Radio Simba as Dr. Mulyamayinja. Many will know and recognize Charles James Ssenkubuge from the famous “Kigenya Agenya” drama series, where he played the loquacious Sergeant Mpiima, the closest thing to law and order in a village called Kigenya.
Currently, he serves as the General Manager of Salt Media and the Chairman of Bakayimbira Dramactors. He is also a Pastor at Gospel Light Baptist Church Kansanga and an awardee of Uganda at 50 Golden Medal for exemplary service in the field of art.
