On top of English, French, and Portuguese, Botswana is looking to add the Swahili language to their school curriculum in the near future.
Fidelis Molao, Botswana’s Minister of Basic Education, made the announcement while at a language teaching workshop in Francistown, Botswana’s second-largest city.
If and when approved, Swahili would become the first African language from outside Botswana. Botswana would join the likes of Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, DR Congo and parts of Malawi as the countries to openly recognize Swahili as a nationally accepted language.
