Quique Setien has been sacked by Barcelona after a disappointing campaign that so them a season with no trophy. The former Real Betis coach has been relieved of his duties after just seven months on the job.
The 62-year-old has overseen Barcelona’s worst ever campaign since the season of 2007/08 where they went without a trophy. The news for the sacking of Setien comes after the humiliation by Bayern Munich in Lisbon in a champions league quarterfinal. Barcelona lost the game 8-2 after they couldn’t contend the in-form Germans who were by far better than them the whole match.
The former Barcelona player was already under pressure even before the game because he had seen his team surrender the La Liga trophy to arch-rivals Real Madrid after football returned from the forced lockdown.
Setien had only Europe’s elite competition to make Barca believe that he was the right man to overturn misfortunes of that had covered the club in recent seasons in the competition but his humiliation means he will leave the Camp Nou without a trophy.
With the new campaign set to start in weeks, Barcelona is said to be on a search of a new head coach with former legends in Xavi, the Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman and former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino touted as candidates for the Barca managerial job.
