Arsenal has moved quickly to replace their second choice goalkeeper Martinez with the capture of Alex Runarsson. The goalkeeper has joined the gunners on a four year deal from French side Dijon that will run until June 2024.
The 25-year-old Iceland international joined the Ligue 1 club in July 2018 making 13 appearances for them in all competitions last season.
Alex started his career with KR Reykjavik in his home country. He went on to join FC Nordsjaelland in Denmark, where he made 62 appearances during a three-year spell, before moving to Dijon in 2018.
Arsenal first-team Manager Mikel Arteta who chose against keeping Martinez at Arsenal says that the capture of the Iceland international was meant to bring in healthy competition for the goalkeeper spot.
“We want to create healthy competition for places and we look forward to seeing Alex bring further depth to the goalkeeping position.”
The former Dijon player will wear the number 13 jersey at Arsenal as he hopes to provide cover for Leno ahead of next season.
