Arsenal lifted their second successive domestic trophy with a win over last season’s premier league champions Liverpool on after a penalty shootout.
The Gunners lifted the community shield at Wembley once again after they beat Jurgen Klopp’s men on penalties 5-4 as the game had ended 1-1 after 90 minutes.
Arteta’s men took the lead in the first half on 12 minutes as captain Aubameyang broke the deadlock with a well-taken strike from the edge of the box. After the break, Liverpool came back strong to pile more pressure on the Arsenal defense and it was in the 73rd minute that Liverpool’s substitute Minamino canceled Aubameyang’s first-half curling effort after the ball dropped to him in a strong position.
Arsenal had several chances but their inability to finish them off meant that the Japanese international’s goal had set up a penalty shoot-out from which Arsenal emerged 5-4 winners. Liverpool Rhian Brewster missed his penalty after he was brought with few minutes to play hitting the crossbar with Liverpool’s third spot-kick. Arsenal captain Aubameyang made no mistake from the spot as he wrapped up a clean sweep of penalties for arsenal to give them the trophy.
This arsenal triumph is the second in a period of four weeks and Arsenal fans will be hoping that Mikel Arteta can deliver more trophies in the coming season that is starting on the 12th of September.
