After submitting the mandatory signatures for the nomination of presidential candidates, the opposition Forum for Democratic Change is set to start the nationwide mobilizations.
Yesterday, the FDC was at the Electoral Commission to submit their mandatory ahead of nomination. The nomination of candidates is set to happen on 2nd and 3rd November.
Paul Bukenya, the Electoral Commission’s acting spokesperson said that these signatures need to be returned at least two weeks before the nomination dates so the EC can verify them. According to the Presidential Elections Act, a person qualifies to contest as a candidate if he/she is 18 years and above, his/her nomination is supported by 100 registered voters from two-thirds of all districts of Uganda (98 districts) and has paid UGX20million, among others.
Forum for Democratic Change begins its nationwide mobilization campaigns across the country today with activities to be held in Kalangala as the first stop. After Kalangala, the FDC will be in Masaka tomorrow and Kayunga and Buvuma subsequently.
They say they want to use this opportunity to spread the FDC ideologies far and wide in this window before nomination.
FDC hopes to nominate Party President Patrick Amuriat as flag-bearer after he won the party primaries. He would go through unchallenged after Wasswa Birigwa withdrew from the race at the 11th hour.
